Ingredients
– 1 lb ground beef (80/20 or leaner)
– 4 slices of rye or sourdough bread
– 4 slices of Swiss cheese (or cheese of choice)
– 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
– 2 tablespoons butter
– Salt and pepper to taste
– Optional: Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, or other seasonings
Instructions
Creating a delicious Classic Patty Melt is straightforward. Just follow these steps:
1. Prepare Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions, cooking until caramelized and golden brown, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning. Set aside.
2. Form Patties: While the onions are cooking, divide the ground beef into 2 equal portions, then shape them into patties. Season both sides liberally with salt and pepper.
3. Cook Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the beef patties and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. If using, add Worcestershire sauce and cook for an additional minute per side.
4. Assemble Sandwiches: Place a slice of cheese on each patty while they’re still in the skillet. Allow the cheese to melt slightly.
5. Prepare Bread: Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. Place two slices, butter-side down, in the pan. On each slice, layer a melted patty with cheese, followed by caramelized onions, and then top with the remaining slices of bread, butter-side up.
6. Grill Sandwiches: Grill until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes. Carefully flip, pressing down slightly, and grill the opposite side until golden and the cheese is fully melted.
7. Slice and Serve: Once grilled to perfection, remove the sandwiches from the skillet. Let them cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.
This method gives you a wonderfully crispy, cheesy treat that’s hard to resist!
